On the night of January 25 we were awakened by a great fanfare of cheering and horns rising up from the street. Outside, we found hundreds of Hindus in colourful attire, lining the streets and bearing gifts to honour the deity Lord Murugan. This would be our first introduction to the Hindu festival of Thaipusam.
